You may often hear about Time Dilation through time-travel sci-fi movies or space missions. But did you know that time dilation isn’t just fiction?

In the Twentieth century, humans learned the revolutionary concept that time is not a universal measure.

That is, no matter what our life is like, it is governed by the same second, the same minute, the same hour, even the same day or week, whichever part of the world we live in, time will not be absolute or absolute. It will always be relative. Time travel depends entirely on the speed and acceleration at that moment.

Real Time Dilation Case

As you can understand, many different things will happen to the human body that is in outer space.

In March 2016, a former astronaut, known as Scott Kelly, completed his mission on the ISS during a total time in its orbit of five hundred and twenty days, circling Earth at a speed of 28,160 km / hour. When he returned to Earth, Scott Kelly was five milliseconds younger than his twin, Mark Kelly, who was also a former NASA astronaut.

This can happen because of Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity which states that time moves slower for moving objects than time for objects that remain stationary.

This time dilation will be more felt if an object is close to the speed of light. Hence, in humans who are still in Earth orbit, the time difference due to this time dilation is not very pronounced.

About Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity

There is a scientific explanation for this shrinkage phenomenon. Namely with the Special Theory of Relativity put forward by the Famous Scientist, Albert Einstein.

In this theory Einstein revealed that no object in motion or at rest is absolute or absolute. Everything is relative, depending on the frame of reference used.

Let’s take a simple example: Suppose you are on the side of a road, observing a car that is speeding up. You see the car moving fast but to the person who sees the car from the plane, he sees the car moving slowly.

Another example is suppose we say that you are sitting and still, not going anywhere. You would say that you are not moving, but for astronauts who are in space, who are moving fast in orbit, you are moving as the Earth rotates. This is how time is called relative. Varies based on each perspective.

This theory applies to all objects except light. Because according to Einstein only light has a constant velocity in all frames of reference. Wherever we observe light, its speed will remain at 3 × 108 m / second.

Then what happened to Scott Kelly ? Well, we can understand this with the example of time dilation put forward by Walter Fendt.

In this simulation, suppose a spaceship traveled five light hours, for example from Earth to a small planet. It can be seen that the time on the spacecraft moves slower than two hours on Earth and on the planet, in which case both places are stationary.

In the case of the Kelly twins, a person has a different age due to the time travel he takes in space for a certain period of time.

So it can be concluded that time dilation will be experienced by moving objects whose movement is close to the speed of light.

Experimenting with time dilation

The experiments that can prove this strange phenomenon are based on unstable particles, namely pions and muons.

Physicists have expectations of how fast these particles will break down if they are stationary, but when they fall to Earth in the form of cosmic rays, they travel at high speed.

The degree of damage did not match the expert’s predictions but if special relativity was applied then taking into account time from a particle’s point of view time would be as expected.

Several other experiments have also been conducted to confirm this phenomenon.

One such experiment was the Hafele Keating experiment in 1971 which involved an atomic clock, a highly accurate clock that uses the resonant frequency of the atom as its resonator.

This clock is flown on a plane that is moving in the opposite direction. There is a time difference in clocks as a result of relative motion, even though atomic clocks will only experience a time delay of one second to a thousand years.

There are other instances where time has slowed down. If previously the special theory of relativity was the prevailing theory, in this case what applies is the general theory of relativity involving black holes.

You may have read that black holes can bend space-time, engulfing all objects so that even a single beam of light cannot escape.

Remember also that according to some scientists, black holes have an event horizon, the area around the black hole, a point that, once entered, cannot return.

This rotating spacetime means the closer we are to the black hole, the more time it slows down for us relative to the world outside it.

  1. Also it is said according to Einsteins theory, gravity does not exist. Its only a concept to explain basic physics, but when you factor in relativity, it counters the existence of gravity as a force. Weird huh? I dont fully understand it myself, but its a growing body of research right now.

    1. Yes indeed. I also still have a lot of questions about this, but it’s a mystery especially in science, I find it fun.

      And, many of Einstein’s theories are still being investigated.

      Hopefully in the future there will be interesting results.
